Allergens & Food Safety

Last updated: 7 September 2026

1. We bake in a shared kitchen

Everything we make is produced in a kitchen that handles wheat and gluten, milk and dairy, eggs, tree nuts (including pistachio, hazelnut, almond and walnut), peanuts, soy, sesame and sulphites.

We take allergen handling seriously and we follow our registered Food Control Plan. But we cannot operate separate allergen-free production lines, so:

We are unable to guarantee that any of our products are completely free from traces of any allergen, due to possible cross contamination.

If you have a severe allergy or anaphylaxis, please make your own judgement about whether our food is right for you. We would much rather tell you honestly than have you take a risk on our behalf. Talk to us before you order and we will tell you exactly what is in a product.

2. Dietary descriptions on our products

Where we describe a product as suiting a particular diet, we mean how it is made, not that it is produced in a segregated environment.

  • Classic Basque Cheesecake — made with no flour, no butter and low sugar. It is gluten free by recipe. It is baked in a kitchen that handles wheat, so the cross-contamination statement above applies.
  • Vegan and plant-based items — made without animal products by recipe, in a kitchen that handles dairy and egg.
  • Any other dietary description on a product page follows the same rule: it describes the recipe, and the shared-kitchen caveat still applies.

We do not use “may contain” as a substitute for telling you what is actually in something. If you want the ingredient list for any product, email us and we will send it.

3. Requests to leave an ingredient out

Please do not rely on a note typed into checkout for an allergy.

Our cakes are made exactly as they are described on the website. A note added at checkout reaches us after your order is placed, is not an agreed change, and is never a guarantee that a product is safe for an allergy.

If you need something made differently, contact us before you order at hello@bluemoonbakehouse.co.nz or 022 302 2197. We will tell you honestly whether it is something we can do. If we agree to it, we will confirm it to you in writing — and even then, the shared-kitchen statement in section 1 still applies.

4. Looking after your cake

Our cakes are fresh, preservative free, and made to be eaten soon.

  • Keep refrigerated at 4°C or below until an hour before serving, unless we have told you otherwise.
  • Eat on the day of collection or delivery where possible. Cream, custard, fresh fruit and mousse products should be eaten within 24 hours.
  • Do not leave a cake in a warm car or in direct sun. Buttercream, mousse and cream will not survive it.
  • Transport flat, on a level surface, not on a seat or a lap.
  • Once a cake has left us, how it is stored and transported is out of our hands, and we cannot be responsible for a cake that has been left out of refrigeration.

5. Non-edible decorations

Some cakes include non-edible items — candles, toppers, ribbons, flowers, supports and boards. Remove all of them before serving. Where we use fresh flowers, they are food-safe varieties, are wrapped and inserted for display only, and are not to be eaten. Chocolate letters, plaques and similar decorations are edible unless we tell you otherwise.

6. If something is wrong with your food

Contact us straight away — the same day if you can — at hello@bluemoonbakehouse.co.nz or 022 302 2197. Please keep the product rather than throwing it out; it helps us find the cause and it helps us put it right for you properly.

If you believe you have had a reaction to something we made, please tell us immediately and seek medical advice. In an emergency call 111.

7. Our food safety obligations

Blue Moon Bakehouse operates under a registered Food Control Plan in accordance with the Food Act 2014, and we label and describe allergens in accordance with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, Standard 1.2.3.

Nothing in this statement excludes, restricts or modifies your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.
