Cancellation Policy

Last updated: 7 September 2026

Everything we make is baked to order. Our cakes and pastries are made for one customer, on one date, and they cannot be resold — so our cancellation terms are different for made-to-order food than they are for our shelf products. Please read the section that applies to your order.

1. Cakes, pastries and all perishable food (made to order)

Cancellations must reach us more than 24 hours before your scheduled collection or delivery time.

  • More than 24 hours' notice — we will cancel your order and refund you in full to your original payment method.
  • Less than 24 hours before your collection or delivery time — the order cannot be cancelled and is not refundable. By that point your cake is in production: the components are baked, the fruit is prepared and the decoration is scheduled. We are sorry to be firm about this, but the ingredients and the labour have already been committed to your order and they cannot be recovered.

This applies whether or not you collect the cake. An uncollected cake is not a cancellation.

How to cancel: email hello@bluemoonbakehouse.co.nz or call 022 302 2197 with your order number (#BM____). We time your cancellation from when it reaches us, so please use email or phone rather than a social media message or a comment on a post. If you send it outside our opening hours, we will treat it as received at the time you sent it.

A note in your Shopify order is not a cancellation. Notes typed into checkout are read after the order is placed and are not a reliable way to reach us. Please email or call.

2. Wedding cakes, custom and large orders

Custom builds, tiered and wedding cakes, and custom orders over $100 — which require a 50% deposit — are quoted and scheduled individually, and we buy in for them well ahead. All custom cake orders also need a minimum 48 hours' lead time when you place them. For these orders:

  • More than 7 days before the event — cancel for a full refund less any deposit already spent on ordered-in materials, which we will itemise for you.
  • 7 days or less before the event — the deposit is not refundable.
  • 48 hours or less before the event — the order is payable in full and is not refundable.

Design, flavour and dietary details are locked in at the point we confirm your order. Changes after that are not guaranteed and must be agreed with us directly — a change requested in a checkout note is a request, not a confirmed change.

3. Retail products (packaged, non-perishable)

Our shelf products — gift boxes, dry goods, merchandise and anything else that is not baked to order:

  • Before your order has been despatched — you can cancel and we will refund you in full.
  • Once your order has been despatched — it can no longer be cancelled, and we are not able to refund it.

To cancel, email hello@bluemoonbakehouse.co.nz as early as you can with your order number. We pack quickly, so please do not assume an order can be caught.

4. If we have to cancel

Very occasionally we may need to cancel an order — an ingredient fails, equipment breaks, or a slot cannot be made. If that happens we will contact you as soon as we know, offer you the nearest alternative we can, and refund you in full if we cannot deliver what you ordered. We will not substitute a different cake without asking you first.

Our acceptance of your order (see our Terms of Service) is what forms the contract, so where we decline an order before confirming it, your payment is refunded in full.

5. Your rights under New Zealand law

This policy covers changing your mind. It does not limit your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.

If something we sold you is faulty, unsafe, not of acceptable quality, or is not what we described, you are entitled to a remedy regardless of the timeframes above. Please tell us straight away — for food, ideally on the day, and please keep the product where you can, as it helps us put it right and helps us find the cause.

Nothing in this policy is intended to exclude, restrict or modify any right you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.
